Wavelength

Epilation with a laser is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis: Energy is applied to the treatment area so as to maximize damage to the target structures while minimizing the effects to the surrounding tissue.

For epilation, the target structures are the melanin pigments in the hair follicles. Because the skin contains much less melanin than the hair, the laser radiation passes through the skin, even for patients with a darker skin type.

Epi 808

The high absorption of 808-nm radiation by melanin limits the use of lasers with this wavelength to patients with lighter skin. For this reason, the Epi 808 should be used mainly for epilation of skin types I - IV. The wavelength 808 nm has proven itself over many years and is used in most diode lasers.

Epi 980

Nd:YAG 1064-nm lasers are often used for epilation of darker skin types. Treatments with the Epi 980 however are faster and cause less pain. You can use the Epi 980 for epilation of all skin types.
