Wavelength

308-nm excimer lasers operate differently than other dermatological lasers. Lasers with longer wavelengths fire very short pulses (in ms or ns) with high energy density. The resulting physical reaction is a warming-up or even destruction of the tissue in the target area and is used as a therapeutic option.

Treatments with 308-nm wavelength are performed with a very low energy density and long pulses. There is no warming-up or removal of tissue in the target area. Instead, the UV radiation stimulates the tissue in the target area. What exactly happens at the cellular level has not yet been cleared up due to the complexity. In any case, there are changes within the cell on the DNA and protein level. "Sick cells" react more sensitively to these changes and pathologically changed cellular processes are normalized.

In scientific psoriasis studies, the treatment success in the UV range 254 - 313 nm was compared based on the resulting erythema. The effective range is between 290 - 315 nm, the optimal range is between 308 and 311 nm (the resulting erythema is smallest here in relation to the effectivity). This means that the 308-nm TALOS excimer system, compared to broadband UVB devices, reduces the risk of side effects while working with the highest efficiency.
