Psoriasis, vitiligo and neurodermatitis can be effectively treated with intense ultraviolet light. Only a couple of treatments suffice for visible, long-lasting results.
Ultraviolet light is found in natural sunlight. There is long-wave UVA radiation with a wavelength of 320 to 400 nm and short-wave UVB radiation with a wavelength of 280 to 320 nm. UV radiation is responsible for tanning of the skin; UVB radiation also supports the synthesis of vitamin D. On the other hand, UV radiation is responsible for sunburn, early skin aging and skin cancer.
Modern dermatology takes advantage of the positive effects of UV radiation for treatment of autoimmune diseases and other inflammatory diseases of the skin.
Which skin diseases can be treated with intense light?
Quantel Derma offers treatment solutions with light in either the UVA or the UVB spectrum as well as laser systems for treatment of onycomycosis. They can be used for treatment of skin diseases such as:
- psoriasis
- vitiligo
- various atopic eczema such as neurodermatitis (atopic dermatitis)
- hypo-pigmentations, i.e. lighter spots on the skin
- alopeciaareata
- mycosis fungoides
- onychomycosis and much more
How does the therapy of light-sensitive skin diseases work?
The affected areas of the skin are targeted with high doses of ultraviolet radiation. There are special handpieces or treatment screens that direct the radiation at the areas to be treated. While UV cabins subject the entire body to UV radiation, Quantel Derma’s modern light systems protect the healthy skin from the negative effects of UV radiation.
Thanks to this focused treatment, ultraviolet radiation can be highly dosed, exactly according to the patient’s needs. This leads to faster results in less and shorter treatments. The method is thus ideally suited for patients with defined, localized plaques.
The symptoms of psoriasis can vanish for a long time – partially or even completely. The affected areas shrink; infections, redness and desquamation are reduced. For patients with vitiligo, the treatment with ultraviolet radiation stimulates the regeneration of pigment cells, which can tan the white spots. The anti-inflammatory effects of UV light also reduce atopic dermatitis and other skin diseases.
The therapy with ultraviolet radiation has nearly no side effects. The skin can be reddened for some hours after the treatment, comparably to slight sunburn – a natural effect of UV irradiation that fades quickly.
